What Are The Different Surface Finishes For Nelco PCB?

Surface finishes for PCBs are very much important in terms of performance and durability. Nelco PCB design is just as vital as prototyping, production, and testing. So, this should be more specified with the surface finishes of your Nelco PCBs.

Let’s clarify the Nelco PCB surface finishes.

    Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold- ENIG

ENIG provides thin gold plated surfaces with a solderable film that protects the copper traces and separates the nickel barrier from the copper. It is a typical and costlier surface finish for the Nelco printed circuit board. ENIG is a perfect, efficient, and long-lasting finish. ENIG is RoHS compliant and has a very low loss.

    Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold Finish

    Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold Finish

    Hot Air Solder Levelling- HASL

By HASL finish, clamps clasp the Nelco PCB vertically, before it gets immersed in a flux bath. The printed circuit board is then submerged in a hot, molten solder vat before being finished.

The finish consists of a tin finish before hot-air knives flatten the printed circuit board. The finish ensures the proper thickness of the board and it becomes uniform. Military and aerospace industries are currently using the finish.

    Lead-free HASL

Lead-free HASL has some similarities to HASL, yet there is a lack of alloy. Instead of alloy, HASL processes copper and tin, or nickel and tin, or nickel, copper, germanium, and tin alloy. It is to be noted that the lead-free HSLI finish is not a common finish.

    Immersion Silver- Ag

Immersion silver is a nickel-free finish that is applied to the surface by chemical displacement. It is less costly than ENIG, and also RoHS compliant, and has a low loss. This finish needs a special storage facility to prevent subsequent discoloration and oxidation.

    Immersion Silver- IAg Finish

    Immersion Silver- Ag Finish

    Immersion Tin- IT

Chemical displacement is used to apply immersion tin to the printed circuit board’s surface, resulting in a thin tin coating over copper traces. It is less costly than the ENIG and IAg as well. Generally, the tin finish is used on high-speed telecom Nelco PCB.

    Immersion Tin Finish

    Immersion Tin Finish

    Hard Gold- HG

Hard gold is another Nelco PCB surface finish commonly used for mechanical applications like buttons and keyboards. The finish is applied to the nickel and is perfectly attached to the Nelco PCB.

    Hard Gold Platting

    Hard Gold Plating

Electroless Nickel Electroless Palladium Immersion Gold- ENEPIG

ENPIG is a three-layered Nelco PCB finish that is applied to the printed circuit board’s surface as well as the wire connections. ENPIG protects copper and prevents its contact with other metal parts. ENPIG adds an additional anti-oxidation layer to nickel, reducing corrosion. ENPIG is considered a universal finish for printed circuit boards because of its working compatibility with copper, nickel, gold, aluminum.

Electroless Nickel Electroless Palladium Immersion Gold- ENEPIG Finish

Electroless Nickel Electroless Palladium Immersion Gold- ENEPIG Finish

    Soft Bondable Bond

Soft bondable bond is almost the same as the ENPIG that possesses a similar implementing technique on printed circuit boards. It needs less space for wire management benefiting from its crown surface pad.

What Are The Nelco PCB Quality Standards?

There are five categories of quality standards for the Nelco PCB.

    1. RoHS Standard: RoHS stands for Restriction of Certain Hazardous Substances. It certifies the electronic equipment for the maximum allowance of the proportion of hazardous or the maximum limit for disposal of substance difficulties. If there is a certificate of RoHS for an electronic product, that means the product has the maximum limit of allowed hazardous, or disposal substance difficulties.
    2. European Conformity (CE) Standard: CE stands for European Conformity. CE marking is a standard of manufacturing goods where the manufacturers have to prove compliance with EU health, environmental, and safety protection legislation, and confirm the products with relevant requirements.
    3. ASTM Standard: The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is an international standard-setting organization that develops technical specifications for a variety of goods, systems, services, and materials.
    4. UL Standard: Underwriter Laboratories, a third-party certification company that certifies and sets standards for new products for over a century.
    5. ISO Standard: International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a worldwide standard company that sets standards for products, and services. ISO works in more than 160 countries.

It is a non-governmental worldwide federation that comprises standard bodies for each member country of it and the standard body represents that certain country. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI), for example, represents the United States..

How To Manage Quality Control Of Nelco PCB?

There are different criteria and methods of testing the chemical, physical, mechanical, and performance of the Nelco PCB.

Following are the major quality control testing methods for Nelco PCB.

    Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)

    Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)

Differential Scanning Calorimetry is authorized to access one of the thermos-analytical methods to the chemical and physical properties of prepregs and laminates. DSC checks and measures the flowing heat variation through the specific epoxy resin system compared to the existing aluminum reference.

    Infrared Spectrophotometry

Infrared or IR Spectrophotometry measures a Nelco PCB material’s chemical fingerprint following the transmission, and absorption characteristics of IR frequencies.

    Thermos-Mechanical Analysis

Thermos-mechanical Analysis estimates the dimensional changing of a Nelco printed circuit board. The process happens during the heating up of the PCB from room temperature to the maximum set temperature.

    Thermos-Gravimetric Analysis

Thermal-Gravimetric Analysis determines the weight loss of the board’s materials in relation to temperature. The heating-up generally happens through a heat-up ramp or isothermal mode.

How Does Board Penalization Play An Important Role In Sizing The Nelco PCB?

To minimize the size of your electronic goods, you have to minimize the size of your printed circuit board. For this reason, you should penalize your Nelco printed circuit board while you are determining the initial size of your board.

For more specific, if you don’t want to compromise the performance and functionality of your board. The penalization of PCB size is not only for the maximization of board yield, but also it helps to keep the board cost low.

What Are The Considering Factors While Selecting Vias For A Multilayer Nelco PCB?

One of the most crucial components for multilayer PCB is the Nelco PCB via. The vias serve as a conduit for electrical and thermal energy to pass between the layers.

The following are the most important things to consider while selecting vias for multilayer PCBs.

    Via Size

Via size selection is a very important fact for PCB. The most popular size of via is 10 mil, which would be reduced to size 7 mil after the laying, though the size relies on the PCB thickness. Micro vias with 4 mil holes can be mechanically drilled or laser drilled, depending on the Nelco PCB thickness.

    Via Type

You have to choose the type of vias before designing. Either it might be buried via, or blind via, whatever is appropriate for your project. You will get more space if you get a single laminating lacking via technology.

    Different Types of Via

    Different Types of Via

    Right Technology

Choose the right technology of manufacturing vias. Your Nelco PCB manufacturer is the right person who would do the thing properly.

    Via Tolerance

Check and test the tolerance of via’s hole size. Most of the Nelco PCBs fabricators design in-house hole guidelines.

    Annular Ring

Consider the requirements of the annular ring according to classes 2 and 3. The annular rings are generated after drilling through the pads of each layer of the board.. It helps to get sufficient area for the interior even with the linkage of copper traces on certain layers.

    Nelco PCB Annular Ring

How Can Material Loss In Nelco PCB Be Minimized?

While designing a Nelco PCB board, you have to keep in mind the fact of material loss. It becomes a key factor during the design. So you have to select the materials considering the factors of material loss.

The material loss includes skin effect, loss tangent, fiberglass composition, relative dielectric constant. Impedance mismatches, absorption of dielectric, losses of conductors mainly cause the material loss.

By controlling the traceroutes, geometries, and separation, impedance mismatches could be perfectly managed. Yet, the material loss might be beyond the control when the data rates go to 10 Gbps or higher.

So, you have to consider dielectric fabrication while the design is in process. Besides this, the following are some factors to be considered to mitigate the material loss.

    1. Relative dielectric constant
    2. Skin effect
    3. Fiberglass composition

What Is Nelco PCB’s Hybrid Construction?

The Nelco PCB’s hybrid construction is a powerful building process for controlling the cost of the printed circuit board, especially for high-speed PCBs.

The layers that require high radio signals only use a higher cost for construction along with a low loss material. Consequently, other PCB layers use low-cost FR4 core materials.

Maintaining a uniform prepreg across the Nelco PCB requires a common hybrid construction. Blending prepreg in the PCB might cause lamination issues. To avoid issues, the varying temperature is needed for the perfect bonding of prepregs.

What Is The Effect Of Glass Transition Temperature In The Manufacturing Of Nelco PCB?

All Nelco PCBs are able to expand and contract due to changes in temperature. Glass transition temperature (Tg) can impact the manufacturability of Nelco PCB. The thermal expansion of material dictates the extension and reduction rate coefficiently.

When the resin in the Nelco PCBs material starts to expand in the fastest time, the transition temperature is the main temperature influence there. The mechanical pressure on the printed circuit board is increased by the epoxy resin’s quick expansion.

Since the copper and fiberglass weave are laminated together because of the transition temperature, this strengthens the PCB across X and Y-Axis. The resulting expansion goes through the Z-Axis. Over-pressure for vertical fast expansion results in delamination of Nelco PCB material’s soldering connections.

What Effect Does Fiberglass Weave Have On A Nelco Printed Circuit Board’s Performance?

Weaving glass yarn fibers are used to produce fabric-like fiberglass panels. The fiberglass panels are then teemed and use epoxy resin to build the prepreg, and core materials. Because of different densities, and thicknesses in the fiberglass, the fiberglass might be spanned from tightly weaved epoxy fill to loosely-weaved fiberglass epoxy fill.

Depending on the various fiberglass yarn count and utilization, the weaves are divided into different groups of glass styles. The dielectric constant will be more steady while the weave netting will be more rigid in Nelco PCB.

On the converse, the dielectric constant will be less steady because of loose weave leading. And this could cause variations in trace impedance. Lastly, this can cause distortions of propagation in the closely matched radio signals.

What Are The Benefits Of A Nelco PCB With A Lower Dielectric Constant?

The dielectric constant determines Nelco PCB’s ability to become polarized across accumulated electrostatic energy and the PCB electric field. It also pertains to the material capacity required for radio signal propagation as well as the frequency variation of radio signals.

    Dielectric Constant

    Dielectric Constant

In a Nelco PCB, it is essential to remember that the traces are not able to confine the electromagnetic waves. The waves are actually confined in the medium around the traces. The dielectric constant plays a vital role to determine the behavior of radio signals.

So, there are crucial advantages of a lower dielectric constant.

    1. Has a faster propagation of radio signals through the materials of Nelco PCB
    2. Has a better insulation
    3. Provides a greater trace impedance for certain geometry of traces
    4. Generates smaller capacitance for stay trace

In Nelco PCB, How Does Copper Weight Affect It?

One of the most critical parts of printed circuit boards is copper. Copper weight measuring happens in ounces in PCBs per square foot. A printed circuit board’s copper thickness or copper weight refers to the thickness of 1 ounce (oz) copper covering 1 square foot.

    PCB Trace With Copper Thickness

    PCB Trace With Copper Thickness

Suppose, in a Nelco PCB, copper weighing 1 ounce will have a copper layer that is 1.4 mils thick.

Copper weight is important in Nelco PCBs because the different weights of copper are used for different purposes. The plane layers of the PCB are made of one-ounce copper,  and a half-ounce copper is used for the radio signal traces.

On the converse, the denser copper weight will be utilized to get a higher DC current for power delivery. Yet the thickness of copper might be the fact of concerns to manufacturability with laminating and drilling.

What Is The Common Fact Between Nelco PCB And ISOLA PCB?

Nelco PCBs and ISOLA PCB, both are high-frequency PCBs with maximum thermal, mechanical, and chemical performance.

The basic difference between the two printed circuit boards is that the Nelco PCB uses prepreg materials and a myriad of laminate. On the converse, the ISOLA PCB uses laminates and dielectric prepregs of copper clad.
